MSSI & the MAC Lite Provide Easy Compliance for NYC Local Law 196

Modular Security Systems, Inc. (MSSI) has recently received an influx of calls and web traffic from customers in New York and New Jersey that are interested in making sure they are compliant with Local Law 196. This new regulation requires that all construction projects and contractors meet specific safety and security requirements. The portability of the patented Modular Access Control (MAC) Portal allows these customers to rapidly come into compliance with this new OSHA regulation. Through the use of turnstiles and access control technology that tracks users training certifications, contractors in New York can guarantee that all workers onsite are up-to-date with their safety training. Perimeter security for commercial construction sites in major cities like New York is evolving, and to meet the demands of those changing needs, MSSI has introduced a new line of Modular Access Control (MAC) Portals.

The all new MAC-Lite version of the MAC Portal was created specifically for commercial construction projects where foot-print, weight, and delivery of a standard MAC Portal may not be possible. Many commercial construction projects often take place in inner-cities and more urban environments where space constraints call for a smaller, more compact version of our patented MAC Portal with full-height, high-security turnstiles, and access control integration.

Complete with either one or two turnstile lanes, access control technology and a slimmed-down, lightweight design, the new MAC-Lite is already making waves in the commercial construction industry. The new MAC-Lite has already saved many commercial construction projects time and money, and has kept them in compliance with regulations like NYC Local Law 196.

MSSI Secures Major Industrial Construction Projects Around the World

Modular Security Systems, Inc. (MSSI) and the patented Modular Access Control (MAC) have quickly become the perimeter security and access control staple for time and attendance at power, petroleum, and chemical plants across North America and around the world. Our turnkey MAC Portals with access control technology consist of climate-controlled guardhouses, high-security turnstiles, and customer-specified access control technology. In addition to turnstiles and access control our MAC Portals can also be fitted with other security features like surveillance cameras, metal detection and explosive detection equipment if site security requires that level of technology.

The MAC Portal is a plug-and-play access control solution that comes equipped with state of the art ID verification like biometric iris scanners, fingerprint readers, palm readers or simple proximity card readers.

Our customers choose MSSI and the patented MAC Portal because they can pick the type and level of technology that they would like installed in their MAC before it ships to their site. Rapidly deploy-able and turnkey installation is the natural fit for major industrial construction projects in a post-9/11 environment where thousands of military base camps and job sites need additional security.

Many North American plants have contractor entry gates and contractor parking lots that are not equipped with turnstiles or the needed access control in place at those plant entry points. Our patented MAC portals are the perfect fit and are therefore in high demand for refineries, chemical plants and large construction sites around the world.

Although initially developed with site security in mind, our patented MAC Portals are also being used for managing payroll when loaded with access control technology with gate-to-paycheck software.

Many industrial customers use the MAC Portal when a plant is “manning up” for a large capitol project or turnaround maintenance project and expecting an increase in manpower for a limited amount of time.

MSSI has quickly developed an impressive list of customers such as Sunoco Petroleum, Sunoco Chemical, Citgo, Marathon Petroleum, the US Air Force, US 3rd Army, US Pentagon, Jacobs Construction, KBR, Haliburton, Fluor Constructors, CB&I, Northup Grumman, Washington Group, and many others.

Access Control and Turnstiles in a Turn-Key Security Solution

Some Modular Security Systems Inc. (MSSI) customers prefer to have access control hardware and software pre-installed prior to the delivery of their patented Modular Access Control (MAC) Portal. The ability to have card readers and biometric access control solutions already installed and ready to "plug and play" makes the patented MAC Portal the most flexible security solution with turnstiles and a guard office. Depending on your site-specific security requirements, the MAC Portal can come delivered with access control ready to be integrated into your existing access control infrastructure or act as a stand-alone unit.

At MSSI we get calls daily regarding custom access control options that can be integrated into our Patented Modular Access Control (MAC) Portals. In addition to access control technology, MSSI has installed any number of other features including cold/extreme heat weather packages, exterior siding, restrooms, and ballistic packages to our MAC Portals.

When it comes to a portable perimeter security solution with turnstiles and access control technology, the patented MAC Portal is the most customizable, easily transportable solution in the security industry.

Traditional stick built guard houses with turnstiles and access control technology can take months if not years to design, engineer, build, and integrate. In comparison, MSSI can build and deliver a turn-key, ready to use MAC Portal with turnstiles and access control technology in as little as six weeks.

A Variety of Turnstiles are Available in your Patented MAC Portal

In 2004 MSSI invented and applied for a patent for the MAC Portal. The MAC Portal is now patented in the U.S., Canada, and over 30 countries in the European Union.

Some of the largest industrial and commercial construction companies around the world rely on a variety of perimeter security products provided by Modular Security Systems, Inc. (MSSI), which include our patented ISO shipping container modifications with turnstiles. The versatility of the patented Modular Access Control (MAC) Portal allows companies to meet site-specific security requirements by combining our patented products with access control technology, and has earned the respect of a wide range of construction and security companies across the U.S. and around the world.

Typically, standard MAC Portals are built using full-height, high-security turnstiles provided by Alvarado or Boon Edam, but MSSI has historically been open to customer recommendations/requests for other turnstile brands. By partnering with different turnstile vendors such as Controlled Access, Philips Burle Turnstiles, Tomsed Turnstiles, Boon Edam, and Alvarado, MSSI has been able to stay competitive and offer a wider range of products to meet the ever-changing needs of our customers.

“The ability to meet the customer’s site-specific security needs by making them part of the design process is what, I feel, sets us apart from the competition,” stated Kevin Harrison, MSSI Senior Sales Representative.

Portable Perimeter Security and Access Control Technology

Portable Perimeter Security and Access Control Technology

Access control refers to the practice of restricting entry to a construction site, a building, or a room to unauthorized persons while allowing authorized individuals to pass through with some level of ease. Physical access control can be achieved by a security guard or through some form of access control.

Physical access control all comes down to when, where, and how an authorized individual is granted entry to a specific area like a construction site or physical location. Access control technology determines who is allowed to enter or exit, where they are allowed to exit or enter, and when they are allowed to enter or exit.

In the past, access control has sometimes been accomplished by something as simple as a lock and key. However, as technologies have advanced, newer forms of access control technologies have become more and more prevalent in the world of physical security.

Access control technologies like card readers, RFID readers, and biometric identifiers like hand geometry scanners, IRIS scanners, and many more have been put in use.

When a predetermined credential is presented to an access control reader, the reader sends the information to a database that then determines whether or not the individual is granted access to that location.

Modular Security Systems Inc. (MSSI) has installed a wide range of these access control technologies into our patented Modular Access Control (MAC) Portal and have delivered these perimeter security solutions to construction sites around the world.

The patented MAC Portals with full-height, high-security turnstiles pictured in this week’s blog are in use at the One World Trade Center/Freedom Tower Construction site as well as at the Hudson Yards construction project. The new World Trade Center complex will eventually include five high-rise office buildings built along Greenwich Street, as well as the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, located just south of One World Trade Center where the original Twin Towers stood. The construction of the new building is part of an effort to memorialize and rebuild following the destruction of the original World Trade Center complex.

According to the project’s website, Hudson Yards is the largest private real estate development in the history of the United States, and the largest development in New York City since the Rockefeller Center was built in 1931. It is anticipated that more than 24 million people will visit Hudson Yards every year. The site will include more than 17 million square feet of commercial and residential space, state-of-the-art office towers, more than 100 shops, a collection of restaurants, approximately 4,000 residences, a unique cultural space, 14 acres of public open space, a 750-seat public school, and a 200-room luxury hotel – all offering unparalleled amenities for residents, employees and guests. The development of Hudson Yards has been estimated to have created more than 23,000 construction jobs.

MSSI: How Many Turnstiles Do I Need?

Posted by Miles Duncil on Tue, Jan 26, 2016

Modular Access Control, MSSI, Turnstile, Turnstiles, access control, Modular Security Systems Inc, access control turnstiles, turnstiles and access control

One of the most frequently asked questions from our customers is "How many turnstiles do I need?" For obvious reasons, this is probably the most important question a customer can ask when it comes to purchasing or renting a Patented Modular Access Control (MAC) Portal from Modular Security Systems Inc. (MSSI).  Not enough turnstiles can mean employees’ work time is wasted by traffic jams at the entrance to the plant or the project. When people are trying to access your project and are unable to do so in a timely fashion, a lack of respect for management may occur, and this may cause tension on the jobsite. In contrast, too many turnstiles can mean a significant waste of financial resources which could be saved or used on other aspects of your project or plant infrastructure.

In order to determine just how many turnstiles you will need in your patented MAC Portal, first and foremost you will need to calculate the number of employees that will be working on your project. Construction workers at industrial plants or on construction projects tend to work on a strictly organized and ordered shift basis. In order to comply with these strict schedules, employees must be accommodated with the highest possible throughput per turnstile per minute. At the same time that you are trying to get workers in and out of projects during shift changes, it's also important to be able to track their time for time-keeping and payroll purposes. This leads us to a second frequently asked question: "What kind of access control technology do I want to use?"

There are a wide range of access control solutions you can use in your Patented MAC Portal. Choices range from simple access card readers to RFID scanners, to biometric readers like hand-geometry units, IRIS eye scanning devices, and vascular readers that scan the vein structure in the back of an individual’s hands. Depending on the solution you choose, these access control technologies can generate reporting for time-keeping, payroll, and mustering reports in the event of an emergency.

In addition to knowing the number of employees and the type of access control technology you want to use, you will also need to figure out how much time you'd like to devote to your employees’ shift changes.

Once you know how many workers you will have on your project, the type of access control technology you want to use, and how long shift change will be, determining the number of turnstiles you will need in your patented MAC Portal is simple – as simple as inputting all of those data points into our Turnstile Flow Calculator.

The Turnstile Flow Calculator here at www.SecuredByMAC.com may be used to determine precisely the number of turnstile lanes you will need. As a demonstration, we will run through a couple of examples in this week’s Turnstile Blog.

Using the Turnstile Calculator is simple. All you have to do is enter the number of employees you'll have on your project and the amount of time you're allowing for shift change in the "shaded boxes" and the calculator does the rest.

Example 1:

Modular Access Control, MSSI, Turnstile, Turnstiles, access control, Modular Security Systems Inc, access control turnstiles, turnstiles and access control

In this first example we imagine a 500 person work force with a 15 minute shift change. Given that information and the speed with which access control technologies handle the number of people that they do in a "per minute" ratio, we are able to determine that five turnstiles (or a patented MAC-5) are needed for this example.

Example 2:

Modular Access Control, MSSI, Turnstile, Turnstiles, access control, Modular Security Systems Inc, access control turnstiles, turnstiles and access control

In the second example we picture a 1000 person work force with a 20 minute shift change. Given the new figures, we see that six or seven turnstiles would be needed depending on the access control technology you chose to use.

Example 3:

Modular Access Control, MSSI, Turnstile, Turnstiles, access control, Modular Security Systems Inc, access control turnstiles, turnstiles and access control

The third example shows that eight or more turnstiles will be needed.

We here at Modular Security Systems Inc. are determined to help you resolve any and all perimeter security concerns on your major industrial and commercial construction projects. We hope that the Turnstile Flow Calculator we've provided here is helpful and easy to use, but if it's not and you'd like some help from us determining how many turnstiles you will need, simply CONTACT US and we'll be happy to help!
