MSSI Customer FAQ Top 10 Perimeter Security Questions - DID YOU KNOW?

1. What is perimeter site security? How does my jobsite accomplish this successfully?

  • Perimeter site security is how your organization ensures unwanted/non-authorized visitors or intruders do not end up in places they should not be inside your workspace.
  • MSSI ensures your jobsite can restrict or deny access based on lack of credentials, subpar training certifications, jobsite restrictions, etc.
  • MSSI can partner with you by gathering the proper jobsite information, your specific site needs/requirements, and ultimately recommending the proper patented MAC Portal product to give you the confidence that compliance will be in full force.

2. Why do I need a turnstile on my project or jobsite?
  • Lots of answers for this one including: Limiting/reducing/eliminating exposure/risk/liability to your project, ensuring the safety and security of all the workforce on the inside and to the general public on the outside, assistance with payroll accuracy, as well as restricting unwanted guests from walking onto your project when no one is looking. Many of our customers utilize us to remain compliant for Local Law 196 or other site-specific regulatory obligations.

3. What is the cost of a turnstile?
  • MSSI completely customizes every solution offering based on the different factors involved. Ask us for more details.
4. Does MSSI offer a full turnkey solution with provided Access Control systems?
  • Yes. MSSI, if needed, can offer a full turnkey solution with dedicated Access Control Software, monitoring and reporting capabilities, along with a patented MAC Portal turnstile unit ensuring your perimeter site security needs are met and exceeded.

5. Customers sometimes experience “sticker shock” with MSSI costs. Why?
  • Fantastic statement and one that needs context around it. Most of the time, folks fail to realize the scope of their project and the need for a larger budget for safety and security when they are doing their initial bids. Once they come to the realization that they need to procure a full professional security layout, for their organization as well as the end user’s best interests, they have already committed to a smaller budget than is needed.
  • The other important factor to include here is the cost of having an unauthorized person come onto the site and either get injured or cause injury, not having the proper certifications to be onsite or having previous violations nobody knew about. What is the cost of reactively cleaning up a mess that could have been avoided? The time lost, money spent on recovery from the consequences of regulatory issues, and negative publicity to all parties could be incredibly expensive.

6. Who uses turnstiles? Where is the “sweet spot” to have a turnstile on a project?
  • End Users, General Contractors, Contract Managers, Security Integration Firms, etc. – anyone who is looking at ensuring a SAFE and SECURE perimeter to their worksite.
  • The “sweet spot” to have a turnstile solution onsite has changed throughout the years. It used to be stated that our solutions were meant for the biggest jobsites only. These days, organizations are realizing that personnel safety via security tracking is a major priority whether it’s a $500 million new build or a $25 million renovation school project.

7. What is the lead time on getting a turnstile on my project?
  • Lead times vary, depending on a few factors including: are you looking for a standard unit or a customized request, what is the quantity of units desired, and what is the destination of the delivery? Most of our units are on-site ready to go within 1-6 weeks fully integrated and plug-n-play ready to go.
8. Do you lease/rent or only outright sell your products?
  • Great question! MSSI offers our customers the ability to rent or purchase, giving you the flexibility you desire on your project.
9. Are these engineered solution offerings with the patented MAC Portals for Commercial, Industrial, or Government/Military project use?
  • ALL of the above. You can find our SecuredByMAC Products all over the world on military bases, data center builds, healthcare venue builds, turnarounds/shutdowns/outage projects on industrial facility sites, etc.
10. What other products does Modular Security Systems Inc. carry to assist our organization?
  • We are glad you asked! MSSI also carries Vehicle Access (VAC) Portals to assist with motor vehicles coming in and out of site. Guard houses are another popular product line that we assist our customers with. Check us out at www.SecuredByMAC.com for further details on all our products including specification sheets, drawing layouts, and much more.

Top 3 Perimeter Security Solutions for Your Construction Site

Perimeter security is a critical component for industrial and commercial construction projects to be successful, finish on-time, and finish under budget. One of the most cost-effective ways to assure your construction projects are completed on time and on budget is through the use of a high-quality perimeter security solution.

Due to the highly critical nature and value of perimeter security solutions on construction sites, we'd like to use this week’s Turnstile Blog to illustrate the top three most cost-effective security solutions to secure your construction sites while allowing easy entry for authorized individuals to enter and exit your site.

1) Turnstiles like those found in the patented Modular Access Control (MAC) Portal.

When you want to keep the wrong people out and allow the right people in, a turnstile is the best solution. Highly customizable with a wide range of options and available lanes, a turnstile should be a part of your security infrastructure where foot traffic will be present.

2) Vehicle Barrier Gates

Vehicle barrier gates like turnstiles work as deterrents for intruders in vehicles but allow easy access for deliveries and shipments to enter your jobsite. The patented Vehicle Access Control (VAC) Portal is the perfect solution for incorporating vehicle barrier arms/gates into your perimeter security plan.

3) Access Control Technology

Access control technology in the form of hardware and software are the perfect add-on to any perimeter security solution. Perfect for security as well as reporting and time-keeping, some access control technologies can also work with payroll functions.

Did you know that roughly, $300 million to $1 billion in equipment is stolen from commercial and industrial construction sites every year in the United States? The cost of implementing a perimeter security solution can be dwarfed by the loss of man-hours, time, tools, and equipment on an unsecure construction project.

Modular Security Systems Inc. (MSSI) is at the forefront of portable perimeter security solutions using a wide range of access control technology and shipping container modifications. For more information on MSSI and all of our access control options, CONTACT US HERE or call at 740.532.7822.

Massive Modular Guard Office with Turnstiles for the Denver Airport

Modular Security Systems Inc. (MSSI) is nearing the completion of one of the largest patented Modular Access Control (MAC) Portals in company history. Since the introduction of the first four-turnstile MAC Portal we built in 2004, MSSI has developed a standard line of Modular Access Control Portals ranging from 1 to 10 turnstile lanes in a single unit. Like all the perimeter security solutions we offer the evolution of our products are dictated by the site-specific needs of our customers. Based on the needs of our customers, we continue to grow our product line. A great example of that is our V-Series Modular Access Control (MAC) Portal. A little over a decade ago MSSI began building the V-Series MAC Portal (the "V" stands for vestibule).

The patented V-Series MAC Portal combines multiple shipping container modifications with turnstiles and access control into one larger unit. It’s a combination of a Modular Access Control (MAC) Portal with full-height turnstiles and integrated customer-specified access control technology. The vestibule in the V-Series provides employees, workers, and visitors a space to get out of the weather as they make their way through the MAC Portal.

The V-Series, like this nearly complete unit, is for customers who want something with a little more space for their perimeter security solution. Built from four 12' wide 45' long modules, this V-Series has eight turnstile lanes, a non-secure vestibule, a secure vestibule, a security office, and a private office space. Completely insulated and climate-controlled, this massive four-container security solution will soon be transported and assembled at the Denver Airport in Colorado.

MSSI is an Ohio-based intellectual properties holding company with expertise in designing and manufacturing unique perimeter security solutions to address ever-changing worldwide security issues. MSSI sales and core market segments include worldwide ports, worldwide refineries and petrochemical plants, military installations, global industrial contractors, mass transit, and large public events.

Modular Security Systems, Inc. (MSSI) is doing its part to promote green construction through the re-use and recycling of shipping containers for the construction of portable perimeter security solutions. After completing their first trip into the U.S. filled with goods from around the world, these containers are emptied and stored in stockpiles around the U.S. The growing U.S. trade deficit brings roughly 7 million shipping containers in to the U.S. every year while only about 2.5 million are shipped back out.

MSSI takes full advantage of the abundance of these one-trip containers by converting them into the patented Modular Access Control (MAC) Portal, Vehicle Access Control (VAC) Portals and our custom guard booths/guard offices.

Our patented MAC portal is a portable perimeter security solution used to control employee access to secure work sites, as well as data collection for payroll and time and attendance purposes. These recycled shipping containers combined with our turnstile/access control integration are equipped with full-height turnstiles and a sophisticated access control system that will allow only authorized individuals to enter your work site.

The MAC Portals, like all of our perimeter security solutions, can be outfitted with simple proximity card readers or biometric devices such as fingerprint readers, hand geometry readers, or iris scanners. The units are customized to meet the level of security that you deem necessary for your specific site.

The recycled shipping containers combined with turnstiles and access control technology have proven to be more durable and stronger than other materials that are typically used in conventional stick-built construction.

MSSI: Top 5 Tips for Securing the Perimeter of Your Construction Site

Modular Security Systems Incorporated (MSSI) is leading the way to more secure industrial and commercial construction sites around the world, one turnstile and one vehicle access control gate at a time.  Our products are patented in the U.S., Canada, and the E.U. and can be delivered turn-key and ready to implement in your perimeter security plan.

Here are the top 5 tips to securing your construction site and how Modular Security Systems Inc. can help:

1) Access control - An access control system or technology that is integrated into the perimeter of your construction site not only prevents risks of theft and vandalism, but it also helps you keep track of employees’ time and attendance for payroll and time-keeping purposes.

2) Turnstiles – Full-height, high-security turnstiles can act as a visual and physical deterrent for unauthorized individuals and help keep them from entering the perimeter of your construction site. The sight of turnstiles alone makes onlookers aware that without the proper credentials they will not be able to enter your site, while turnstiles allow authorized workers, vendors, and management to easily gain access.

3) Fencing - Much like the turnstile, a well-protected site often incorporates fencing that prevents unwanted individuals from entering your site and establishes a secure perimeter.

4) CCTV - CCTV helps protect your perimeter, cut costs, and provide the evidence you need in the event of a perimeter breach, theft, and/or vandalism. Many businesses today incorporate a CCTV system. CCTV systems are recognized on residential, commercial, and industrial construction job sites as superbly useful in perimeter security.

5) Climate Controlled Guard Offices - Having a climate-controlled guard office for security staff to take post gives your site an added level of security and safety. In the event of an "out of the ordinary" security occurrence having a live person on guard and a place for them to do their work is often unmatched in certain circumstances.

MSSI: Perimeter Security Gates for Construction Projects

In terms of perimeter security, a solid perimeter fence and the access control gates you use could mean the difference between a profitable project and a delayed, over budget project. The perimeter security gate you use can make all the difference in the world, and the ability to move the gate as the project progresses can give you the flexibility to let the security of your site evolve as needed.

Simply put, a movable gate can allow entry at one location of your project, and when necessary it can then be moved to another location. Without a gate, there would be no exit or entry past the perimeter fence you've established around your construction project.

The gate itself could come in many forms. The key requirement being that it can lock out unwanted individuals while allowing authorized individuals to easily access the construction site. Controlling foot traffic to your site is essential, but if you are planning on taking vehicles past the perimeter security, it may also be ideal to add a vehicle gate. For gates that will control access of vehicles, a movable gate may also be required on larger construction sites where heavy equipment may need to enter and exit the site. Sometimes a swinging fence will work, other times a guard and a vehicle barrier arm makes much more sense

An effective perimeter security solution means focusing on security and convenience for both your workers and the delivery of much needed tools, equipment, and building materials. However, the level of security you implement should not be sacrificed for convenience and a lackadaisical approach to controlling access to your construction project.

If you are in need of perimeter security solutions that are easy to use for authorized individuals and impenetrable by unwanted intruders you've come to the right place, Modular Security Systems Inc. (MSSI).
