Top 5 Essentials to Protect the Perimeter of Your Construction Site

When you think of construction site security what is the first thing that comes to mind? Many of you are probably thinking "fences" – and you're not wrong. When it comes to perimeter security on your construction site, a sturdy fence is probably the most cost-effective way to make sure intruders can't and don't enter your perimeter. Fences prevent criminals and thieves from easily accessing your construction site and stealing equipment, tools, and building materials.

But construction site security doesn't end when you put up a strong, tall fence.

In this week’s edition of the turnstile blog we are going to be taking a look at the 5 essentials to protect the perimeter of your construction site.

1. FENCES
We mentioned fences earlier and yes, they are a given, but it never hurts to reiterate the importance of your first line of defense. When it comes to keeping your construction site secure from intrusion and preventing theft, a fence can provide both a physical and visual deterrent. A durable chain link fencing is not only a great idea but it's also easy to put up and tear down once construction has completed.

If you don’t have the time or energy to install this fencing on your own, hiring professional temporary fence installers is your best bet to a secure perimeter. They will have the expertise needed to ensure the temporary fence is installed correctly and will effectively secure your construction site.

2) GUARD HOUSES
Understandably, not all construction project managers are willing to depend on fences alone to keep their site and perimeter secure. Many site managers want to provide the actual physical presence of security guards at their site. Guard houses, guard booths, and guard offices make the perfect place for security professionals to do what they do. Climate-controlled and keeping guards out of the elements when necessary, guard houses may be equipped with access control technology, cameras, counter space, and any other security site requirement that security guards need to keep construction projects safe and secure 24 hours a day.

3) ACCESS CONTROL TECHNOLOGY
Access control technology? What's that? Access control technology can come in a wide range of hardware and software solutions. From the tracking of employees for time and attendance to the tracking of tools and equipment that can easily be tagged with RFID chips, access control technology can not only prevent theft but also help in the incarceration of thieves who are "brave" enough actually steal your stuff! While the type of access control technology you select for your specific job site may vary from one job to another depending on the size and scope of your project, we believe it’s been proven time and time again that no construction site security solution is complete without the implementation of some type of access control technology.

4) TURNSTILES
Have you ever walked right onto a construction project without even being approached by a security guard or having to pass through a secure turnstile or access point? No? Well, criminals have and do. Undeterred by an opening in a fence line and without having to produce identification granting them access to a construction site, criminals enter and exit construction sites everyday just "under the radar" and often walk away with thousands of dollars’ worth of tools and equipment. By utilizing turnstiles as security gates, construction sites around the U.S. are keeping their job sites safe from being entered by individuals who are out looking to steal tools, equipment, and other building materials.

5) VEHICLE GATES
The easy delivery of new tools, equipment, and building materials are essential to any construction project. Vehicle barrier gates like turnstiles work as deterrents for intruders in vehicles but also allow easy access for deliveries and shipments to enter your jobsite. A well marked delivery gate that allows for trucks to enter the construction site are just as important as the gate that allows workers to easily access the site on foot. Without the delivery of tools, equipment, and building materials those workers could be waiting for hours to get to work. The patented Vehicle Access Control (VAC) Portal is the perfect solution for incorporating vehicle barrier arms/gates into your perimeter security plan.

Have you heard that roughly, $300 million to $1 billion in equipment is stolen from commercial and industrial construction sites every year in the United States? The cost of implementing a perimeter security solution can be dwarfed by the loss of man-hours, time, tools, and equipment on an unsecure construction project.

Top 3 Perimeter Security Solutions for Your Next Construction Project

Roughly $1 billion is lost on construction projects around the US every year. The loss of equipment, tools, and stolen time costs construction companies countless amounts of time and money every year – from the smallest residential construction sites to major industrial and commercial construction projects.

The theft of equipment, tools, and loss of man hours is a number one concern for our customers in the construction industry. Traditionally, thieves have considered construction projects “easy” targets when compared to more obvious robbery targets like banks, convenience stores, and gas stations. Many major construction projects are in open areas, in remote locations, and do not have the essential security of walls, fences, and/or people on watch 24 hours a day. The lack of 24-hour security and no local law within sight often means criminals can easily walk away with tools and equipment with little to no way to track the items they've stolen.

Here is where Modular Security Systems Inc. finds its sweet spot.

By utilizing the proper security on your construction site, you can be assured no criminal will easily walk away with the tools and equipment you need to get your job completed on time and under budget. In this week’s edition of the Turnstile Blog, we'd like to take a look at the top 3 critical solutions on your next construction project.

MSSI: Perimeter Security for Major Industrial Power Generation Projects

With the ever-growing need for energy, many power generation facilities are going through major upgrades to improve the efficiency of their power plants. For the most part, job site security at these locations is top of mind, and extra measures are being taken to increase perimeter security systems. On-site security for major outages, new construction projects, and a wide range of various long-term projects are major concerns for many invested in the industry of power generation.

Driven by the ever-increasing demand for more efficient clean power, many of these companies extend the size of their work force on site by up to ten times the normal daily staff. This increase of workers creates a need for an increase in job site security and time-keeping capabilities.

Through the accuracy of the patented Modular Access Control (MAC) Portal as a perimeter security system, many companies have found that they experience a significant drop in lost or stolen time, which the American Payroll Association estimates is 10 percent of a company’s gross income.

Using the patented MAC Portal, many construction projects have drastically increased on-site perimeter security and timekeeping capabilities. By adding a patented MAC Portal in the fence line of a site entrance, no one can access the now-secured area without scanning identification first and being clocked in. The patented MAC Portal can also prove very useful in emergency situations. Through the use of its time-keeping abilities, instant mustering reports can be run to give an accurate account of employees clocked into an area of concern.

Increasing the job site’s perimeter security and safety the patented MAC Portal often pays for itself on many major projects in a relatively short amount of time.

More information on the MAC Portal can be found online at www.securedbymac.com or call us now at 740.532.7822.

Perimeter Security with Turnstiles, Access Control and Guard Offices

Since the early days of man, perimeter security could be as simple as natural barriers like mountains, hills, and tree lines. Today, more advanced chain-link fences, concrete walls, and restrictive gates that require authorized credentials to pass have become the norm. Sophisticated technologies that are meant to keep intruders out and prevent access to certain protected areas are more common in today's perimeter security world. Contained within those perimeters and protected gates – whether by natural barriers or more technologically advanced fences, walls, and gates – are buildings, complexes, and construction areas.

Since the Roman Empire and the building of the Great Wall of China barriers have been an important part of protecting the perimeter of territories, towns, villages, private property – and increasingly more common today, construction sites. Perimeter security for construction sites is designed to keep intruders out, protect tools and equipment, and to protect the public from injury.

Construction companies use perimeter security not only for the safety of their workers, but to also control the flow of authorized individuals in and out of the construction area. Property owners and construction organizations of all sizes use various access control technologies to achieve varying degrees of perimeter security from the smallest to the largest construction sites on the planet.

Beginning with the advent of electronic access control technologies, the concept of perimeter security has continued to evolve rapidly to include more modern, technological solutions like hand geometry readers and iris scanning devices. Today, access control technology coupled with turnstiles and climate controlled guard offices in a turn-key solution can be found on industrial and commercial construction projects from New York City to San Francisco and on around the world.

Modular Security Systems Inc. (MSSI) provides unique perimeter security guard housing with turnstiles and access control technology on commercial construction projects. Our core customer base has been built over years of providing site-specific perimeter security solutions for commercial and industrial construction companies. Every perimeter security turnstile product we provide is driven by a commitment to provide quality products, excellent customer service, flexibility in design, and cost-effective solutions.

MSSI Encourages Recycling and Sustainability by ReInventing the Box

Modular Security Systems, Inc. (MSSI) located in Worthington, Kentucky is doing its part to encourage recycling and sustainability by ReInventing the Box. At MSSI we re-use or recycle "one-trip" shipping containers that have completed their first use in bringing imports into the U.S.  Once the cargo from these containers is unloaded, they are often stored in shipyards around the U.S. where they sit unused. Because of the U.S. trade deficit, it is estimated that about 7 million shipping containers enter U.S. ports every year, and only about half of those containers are reused to ship exports out of the country. MSSI takes full advantage of the abundance of these one-trip containers by modifying them into our patented Modular Access Control (MAC) and Vehicle Access Control (VAC) Portals.

These portable perimeter security solutions are then used on industrial and commercial construction sites to secure the perimeter and control employee/visitor access to these secure work sites. These recycled shipping containers are built with turnstiles, vehicle barrier gates, climate-controlled guardhouses, and access control technology that will allow only authorized workers to enter the secure site.

Our perimeter security solutions like the patented MAC Portal and VAC Portal can be integrated with a wide range of access control technologies that may be tied into existing access control infrastructure or act as a standalone unit.

Our recycling of these shipping containers is environmentally friendly and is a great example of how an otherwise wasted resource can be re-used. The recycled or reinvented boxes have proven to be far more durable and stronger than other stick-built structures that are typically used in conventional construction for construction site security.

Turn-key and easily put in use, the portable perimeter security solutions from Modular Security Systems Inc. have been used by major industrial and commercial construction companies like Fluor, Bechtel, Jacobs, Turner Construction, AECOM, Kiewit, Whiting-Turner, Skanska, and CB&I.

For more information on MSSI and our portable perimeter security solutions for industrial and commercial construction projects CONTACT US HERE or call us at 740.532.7822.
