MSSI: Top 3 Tips to a Secure Construction Site

Experienced project managers and construction site supervisors know the importance of keeping a safe and secure construction site. A secure construction site perimeter can mean the difference between construction project that is completed on time and under budget verses a drawn out, over budget project that falls short of meeting its completion date.

Construction equipment theft and loss of time due to delays costs American construction companies nearly $1 billion every year. Construction managers, planners, and project management need to work on preventing these losses at every step of the construction process, start to finish.

In most cases, a minimal investment in perimeter security can help prevent these losses and avoid theft on the jobsite. Working with knowledgeable professionals is essential when trying to properly secure your construction projects. In this week’s edition of the Turnstile blog we'd like to take a look at the top 3 key elements required to keep your construction site secure.

Our Top 3 Tips for Construction Site Security:

1. Fences
This should be a given. Fences are the first line of defense when it comes to keeping your construction site secure from intrusion and preventing theft. A fence can provide both a physical and visual deterrent for thieves and prevent the public from accidentally wandering onto your construction site. Durable chain link fencing is not only a great idea but it's also easy to put up and tear down.
If you don’t have the time or energy to install this fencing on your own, hiring professional temporary fence installers is your best bet to a secure perimeter. They will have the expertise needed to ensure the temporary fence is installed correctly and will effectively secure your construction site.
 2. Gates for Foot & Vehicle Traffic
Now that you've got the perimeter protected with fencing, it's important to provide gates for workers and deliveries of critical tools and equipment to your construction site. Gates on construction sites can take a number of sizes, shapes, and forms. The most effective way to provide easy access for workers and deliveries to your site while also preventing access to unauthorized individuals is through the use of turnstiles, vehicle gates, and access control technologies.

By providing turnstiles and vehicle gates with access control technology integrated into your security plan, you not only gain an added level of security in physical form, but also in visual form. Thieves and intruders are often deterred by the sight of a turnstile or vehicle gate.

3. Access Control Technology

Access control technology can provide security, time-keeping/payroll data, and be tied into existing security infrastructure or act as a stand-alone solution specific to a gate or entrance to your site. Many different types of access control technology have been developed over the past few decades. Access control solutions from as simple as magnetic card swipes, RFID readers, all the way to more complex hand geometry reader and iris scanning solutions can be used to create a secure perimeter for your construction site.

Products provided by Modular Security Systems Inc. (MSSI) like the patented Modular Access Control (MAC) Portal can tick two of the three boxes on the above list on any construction site.

MSSI has worked with construction companies on projects large and small around the world to successfully secure their perimeters. Complete with turnstiles, vehicle gates, climate-controlled guard offices, and the access control technology of the customer’s choosing, MSSI has provided turn-key perimeter security solutions to keep numerous construction sites safe and secure.

MAC Portals Help Construction Companies Meet Safety Requirements

Over the years a growing need for safety on construction sites has lead to a wide range of changes in regulations and laws meant to help protect workers and secure commodities onsite. On any given construction site, the amount of risk inherent to construction can be mitigated through planning and implementation of a security and safety plan. New regulations like NYC Local Law 196 were created to protect sites from loss of time and keep workers onsite safe by insuring they have received necessary safety training before entering the construction perimeter.

Every construction project whether it be industrial or commercial must establish a perimeter, determine adjacent land use, and plan how access will be granted to authorized individuals while measures are taken to exclude unauthorized people from entering the site.

There on the perimeter of those jobsites is where you will find Modular Security Systems Inc. and our patented line of Modular Access Control (MAC) Portals.

Our patented MAC Portals include a turn-key "all-in-one" design meant for security professionals, to monitor and track workers and visitors as they enter and exit the site. Used in conjunction with access control technology, the patented MAC Portals turnstile lanes and climate-controlled guard houses can help projects meet regulations and conform to safety requirements.

At Modular Security Systems Inc. we know that a safe and secure construction perimeter can make a world of difference when it comes to both cost-efficiet and time-efficient project completion.

The Importance of Perimeter Security on Construction Projects

Modular Security Systems Inc. (MSSI) and the patented Modular Access Control (MAC) Portal has been used to secure the perimeter of ports, mines, construction projects, military installations, and government facilities around the world. From power plants in the US to pipeline construction in Kazakhstan, from the oil sands in Northwestern Canada to copper mines in the mountains of Chile, our patented perimeter security products have been utilized for a wide range of sites.

There is an ever-growing importance for perimeter security on commercial and industrial construction sites across the U.S. and around the world. Security on construction sites has become a fundamental component of a successful construction project that is completed on time and under budget. The purpose of perimeter security is to ensure that access to specified areas is limited to authorized personnel only. Depending on the size of your construction project there is a need for perimeter security complete with easily accessible gates that are integrated with access control, turnstiles, and climate-controlled guard offices.

All of our perimeter security products are designed, engineered, manufactured for easy installation, and built for years of reliable service. Our perimeter security turnstiles were created by incorporating full-height turnstiles into a shipping container with portable access control technologies like card readers, biometric readers, or RFID cards and can be used as a standalone access control system or be tied directly into an existing plant-wide access control system.

The MAC Portal can be delivered within 6-8 weeks from receipt of a purchase order. Built fully integrated with any type of site-specified access control technology, these portable perimeter security solutions with turnstiles offer the perfect solution for both temporary and permanent installations.

Portable MAC Portals with Turnstiles and Access Control

One of the major benefits of having a patented Modular Access Control (MAC) Portal delivered to your site is the lead time. The MAC Portal can be delivered within 6-8 weeks from receipt of a purchase order. Manufactured with any type of site-specified access control technology our portable perimeter security solutions offer the perfect solution for both temporary and permanent installations.

Once delivered, installation can also take place in a matter of minutes! Depending on the site and specifications, the patented MAC Portal can be dropped into a fence line, connected to the electric, and the MAC is fully operational. The portability and ease of installation make the patented MAC Portal the perfect solution for industrial and commercial construction sites in the US and around the world.

Our patented MAC Portals have been used for a wide range of perimeter security purposes on construction projects around the world. Many perimeter security installations on construction sites use turnstiles and are often built into permanent structures. These permanent installations require expensive construction, long timelines, and limited feasibility because they need to be built and are often torn down after a project ends.

What separates Modular Security Systems Inc. (MSSI) and our MAC Portals from the competition is turn-key installation, a customizable design, and the lack of need for construction on site.

Recycle, Re-Use, & ReInvent the BOX with Modular Security Systems Inc.

Recycle, Re-Use, & ReInvent the BOX with Modular Security Systems Inc.

Modular Security Systems, Inc. (MSSI) located in Worthington, Kentucky is doing its part to recycle, re-use, and re-invent the box. We re-use or recycle "one-trip" shipping containers that have completed their trip across the ocean bringing imports into the United States. After the goods from these containers are offloaded, the containers themselves are often stored in shipyards around the U.S. and may or may not ever be used again. Given the U.S. trade deficit, it is estimated that about 7 million shipping containers enter U.S. ports every year, and only about half of those containers are reused to ship exports out of the country. MSSI takes full advantage of the surplus of these one-trip containers by modifying them into our patented Modular Access Control (MAC), Vehicle Access Control (VAC) Portals, and ground-level guard offices.

Our portable perimeter security products are then utilized on industrial and commercial construction sites to secure the perimeter and control employee/visitor access to these secure work sites. Built with turnstiles, vehicle barrier gates, climate-controlled guardhouses, and access control technology these re-purposed containers allow only authorized workers to enter the secure site.

The recycling of these shipping containers is environmentally friendly and is a great example of how an otherwise wasted resource can be re-used. The recycled or reinvented boxes have proven to be far more durable and stronger than other stick-built structures that are typically used in conventional construction for construction site security.

Turn-key and easily put in use, the portable perimeter security solutions from Modular Security Systems Inc. have been used by major industrial and commercial construction companies like Fluor, Bechtel, Jacobs, Turner Construction, AECOM, Kiewit, Whiting-Turner, Skanska, and CB&I.

MSSI Wins MAC Portal Patent Enforcement Lawsuit Against Turnstiles.us, Inc.

MSSI Wins MAC Portal Patent Enforcement Lawsuit Against Turnstiles.us, Inc.

Many professionals in the physical security and access control industries will be interested to learn that this week MSSI successfully concluded its patent lawsuit against patent infringer Turnstiles.us, Inc.

On February 17, 2016 MSSI filed a suit against Turnstiles.us, Inc., a company owned by Patrick McAllister of Conifer, Colorado. The suit was filed after years of warnings to Turnstiles.us, Inc. that they were failing to recognize the multiple patents owned by MSSI for the MAC Security Portal (www.SecuredbyMAC.com).

In the settlement document signed this week by both parties, Turnstiles.us, Inc. agreed to stop sales of several of its infringing access control products, pay MSSI a substantial amount of money, and acknowledged, “... The MSSI Patents collectively cover access control units with (i) structures made of shipping containers, including but not limited to ISO shipping containers; (ii) fiberglass or other plastic structures attached to framed floors made from steel, wood or any other material, and (iii) structures having walls, including solid walls or walls with openings, such as, but not limited to, chain link fence, bars, or wire. (Such access control units are referred to in this Agreement as the “Prohibited Products”) ...”

Dale Lazar, one of the DLA Piper attorneys on the MSSI legal team, had this to say about MSSI’s victory, “This litigation did last a bit longer than any of us originally predicted, but throughout the nearly four-year ordeal MSSI remained on firm legal ground. As the patent attorney of record who filed the MSSI patents with the US Patent and Trademark office starting back in 2004 I must say that I am proud of the outcome in this settlement. You never really know the strength of your patent work until it is challenged.”

The litigation settlement reached this week comes following a nearly four-year legal battle over the patent rights that were awarded to MSSI starting in 2010. The awarded patents cover, among other things, a modular, self-contained access control solution for job sites, construction, military base camps and highly sensitive industrial “soft targets.” MAC Portals have been shipped from the MSSI manufacturing operation in Worthington, Kentucky to customers on six continents. In addition to the US patents owned by MSSI, the MAC Portal is also patent protected in approximately 36 other countries abroad.

Robert Slagel, MSSI CEO and President, had this to say about this patent victory, “I must give credit to the defendants. They were extremely creative and innovative in their quest to find a chink in our patent armor. Turnstiles.us, Inc. ran our patent claims and filings through a myriad of invalidity and other disqualifying attempts. The MSSI legal team was able to quash each of these attempts by Turnstiles.us, Inc. to legally breach the MSSI patent. For years I’ve been confident that MSSI had strong patents but having now run our patents through this gauntlet of legal ‘litmus tests’ gives me immense confidence in our intellectual property position moving forward.”

As part of the settlement document that was signed, this week Turnstiles.us, Inc. will transfer non-monetary property in addition to the substantial monetary payment mentioned above.
