5 Tips for Turnstile Users During the COVID-19 Pandemic

It's common knowledge that anything people put their hands on regularly can be a major hotspot for germs and the spread of bacteria and viruses. From doorknobs to water fixtures to credit/debit card machine keypads to vending machines to cell phones, germs can hide in the most obvious of places. MSSI customers who use the patented Modular Access Control (MAC) Portal with full-height turnstiles have been asking what they can do to protect their employees while navigating their way into and off of construction sites around the world. In response, MSSI would like to offer some tips for turnstile users during the COVID-19 pandemic.

1) Wash your hands regularly. In light of the circumstances we face with COVID-19, "Wash your hands!" has become a major catch phrase. From news anchors to elected officials to co-workers and folks at home, everyone by now has gotten the memo. WASH YOUR HANDS (with warm water, for at least 20 seconds, as often as possible)! It can’t be said enough.

2) If possible, wear gloves when touching a turnstile arm. A great way to limit exposure to viruses and bacteria is to wear gloves when you must make contact with frequently touched surfaces. Gloves create a bit of a barrier between you and the germs that might be on the turnstile arms. Washable gloves should be laundered each day in warm water. Disposable gloves should be placed in the trash immediately. Be sure to wash your hands or use antibacterial hand sanitizer immediately upon removal of whichever type of gloves you choose to wear.

3) Use your elbow, shoulder, or back to push through the turnstile. Don't have a pair of gloves? Use another part of your body to turn the turnstile. Turnstiles are designed to turn in the direction in which they are being pushed. Once the turnstile is unlocked, you can simply (and carefully)  push through the turnstile with your back, elbow, forearm, hip or another part of your body.

4) Don't crowd your co-workers as you make your way through the turnstile. You've probably heard by now that social distancing is key to preventing the spread of COVID-19. You can help reduce the spread by not crowding at the turnstiles as you are making your way through them. Give each other some room (the CDC recommends at least six feet) and be patient as those in front of you enter or exit your construction site through the turnstiles.

5) Regularly disinfect the turnstiles using CDC approved methods. Between shift changes, designate someone on-site to use disinfectant wipes, sprays, and other cleaners to thoroughly clean the surface of the turnstile arms.

At Modular Security Systems Inc. (MSSI) we know how important we all are in preventing the spread of COVID-19 and flattening the curve. We also know that while many have been forced to stay home, many can't, so it's important to be informed on what we can do while at work to stay safe, secure, and healthy.

Limitless Access Control Options in Your Patented MAC Portal from MSSI
When it comes to industrial and commercial construction projects it takes more to protect a perimeter than simply building a tall fence with some barbed wire on the top. A well-thought-out perimeter security plan for any construction site should incorporate multiple levels of security solutions to keep a site safe and secure from intrusion. More than ever before, major construction companies are realizing the value of not just stopping theft on their projects but also taking measures to combine the efforts of security with time-keeping, and payroll capabilities in their access control solutions.

By incorporating access control technology and software into a patented Modular Access Control (MAC) Portal with full-height turnstiles, customers around the world are not only keeping their perimeter secure but they are also able to track employees’ safety training credentials, produce mustering reports, and maintain time-keeping and payroll functionality.

At Modular Security Systems Inc. (MSSI) we work directly with our customers to pick out the right access control solution from a wide range of access control providers we've partnered with over the years.

Every project and construction site has its own set of circumstances, locations, duration, and man-power needs. For that very reason, the security professionals at MSSI know that there is no "one-size-fits-all" access control solution for each of our customers.

By maintaining a working relationship with a wide range of access control technology providers, we have been able to provide RFID card readers, hand geometry readers, and other biometric security devices into our patented MAC Portals.

MSSI & the MAC Lite Provide Easy Compliance for NYC Local Law 196

Modular Security Systems, Inc. (MSSI) has recently received an influx of calls and web traffic from customers in New York and New Jersey that are interested in making sure they are compliant with Local Law 196. This new regulation requires that all construction projects and contractors meet specific safety and security requirements. The portability of the patented Modular Access Control (MAC) Portal allows these customers to rapidly come into compliance with this new OSHA regulation. Through the use of turnstiles and access control technology that tracks users training certifications, contractors in New York can guarantee that all workers onsite are up-to-date with their safety training. Perimeter security for commercial construction sites in major cities like New York is evolving, and to meet the demands of those changing needs, MSSI has introduced a new line of Modular Access Control (MAC) Portals.

The all new MAC-Lite version of the MAC Portal was created specifically for commercial construction projects where foot-print, weight, and delivery of a standard MAC Portal may not be possible. Many commercial construction projects often take place in inner-cities and more urban environments where space constraints call for a smaller, more compact version of our patented MAC Portal with full-height, high-security turnstiles, and access control integration.

Complete with either one or two turnstile lanes, access control technology and a slimmed-down, lightweight design, the new MAC-Lite is already making waves in the commercial construction industry. The new MAC-Lite has already saved many commercial construction projects time and money, and has kept them in compliance with regulations like NYC Local Law 196.

MAC Portals Help Construction Companies Meet Safety Requirements

Over the years a growing need for safety on construction sites has lead to a wide range of changes in regulations and laws meant to help protect workers and secure commodities onsite. On any given construction site, the amount of risk inherent to construction can be mitigated through planning and implementation of a security and safety plan. New regulations like NYC Local Law 196 were created to protect sites from loss of time and keep workers onsite safe by insuring they have received necessary safety training before entering the construction perimeter.

Every construction project whether it be industrial or commercial must establish a perimeter, determine adjacent land use, and plan how access will be granted to authorized individuals while measures are taken to exclude unauthorized people from entering the site.

There on the perimeter of those jobsites is where you will find Modular Security Systems Inc. and our patented line of Modular Access Control (MAC) Portals.

Our patented MAC Portals include a turn-key "all-in-one" design meant for security professionals, to monitor and track workers and visitors as they enter and exit the site. Used in conjunction with access control technology, the patented MAC Portals turnstile lanes and climate-controlled guard houses can help projects meet regulations and conform to safety requirements.

At Modular Security Systems Inc. we know that a safe and secure construction perimeter can make a world of difference when it comes to both cost-efficiet and time-efficient project completion.

Access Control and Turnstiles from Modular Security Systems Inc.

Posted by Miles Duncil on Wed, Dec 11, 2019

Modular Access Control, Modular Security Systems, MSSI, Turnstile, Turnstiles, access control

From the beginning of time through today, there has been and will continue to be a need to limit accessibility to some places for some people. Since the 1960s, access control technology has been utilized to add or restrict entrances and to track people coming and going, and to do so in a wide range of manners. In the not-so-prehistoric early days of access control technology, a simple keypad was used to restrict certain areas. Shortly thereafter, RFID or simple magnetic swipe cards came into use.

In order to meet the needs of modern day access control and perimeter security access control, technology has evolved into tools that allow you to create many layers of protection that can adapt to any security concerns – whether you are at a bank, a military base, or a major industrial or commercial construction site. That evolution and the ever-changing security concerns give reason as to why access control technology today has been developed to allow security professionals to update and maintain their chosen security solution(s) with just a few clicks on a keyboard or with a mouse.

Using biometric access control hardware that ties into access control software, security pros can keep all of their security solutions up to date, management can revise access control lists, times and attendance for payroll purposes, and grant a wide range of authorization levels for individuals quickly and easily – within just a few seconds.

The access control technologies that involve biometric parameters don't require someone to keep track of a card, badge or PIN number. By scanning someone’s fingerprint, hand, the veins in their hand, their eyes, or even their face using facial recognition devices, the access control technologies available use identifiers that can't easily be lost or left on the kitchen counter at the house.

These access control technologies and software solutions can perform tasks above and beyond simply granting access of an individual into a room. They can also help track an individual’s history of activity, create alerts if a door or gate is left open, and in the case of an emergency such as a fire, unlock to allow escape.

Not only does today's access control technology give you peace of mind knowing the harvest won't be raided by the next village over, but it's also friendly to your pocketbook and can help save security-minded folks a lot of time and money. Unlike more traditional modes of perimeter security, modern day access control technologies can not only prevent theft, but can also help track employees for time and attendance – and can be installed at a fraction of the cost of building a 10’ perimeter wall of concrete block. Access control technologies today are so easy to update and maintain that they can give customers a fantastic return on their investment.

Modular Security Systems Inc.(MSSI) is at the forefront of portable perimeter security solutions using a wide range of access control technology and shipping container modifications. For more information on MSSI and all of our access control options, CONTACT US HERE or call at 740.532.7822.

MSSI Sees Increase in Interest from Commercial Construction Sites

Having provided Modular Access Control (MAC) portals to over five hundred locations in the U.S. within 10 years of its inception, it seemed like only a matter of time before the rest of the world caught on. In recent years, MSSI has delivered more than one hundred patented MAC Portals outside the U.S. in places like Canada, to secure the oil sands in places like Iraq and Kuwait, to aid in the security of our troops overseas, and more recently in the Republic of Kazakhstan to protect and secure oil refining.

Modular Security Systems, Inc. (MSSI) has recently received an increase in calls and a significant uptick in internet traffic from potential customers for commercial construction in both the U.S. and abroad.

The patented Modular Access Control (MAC) Portal is a prefabricated, climate-controlled guardhouse with turnstiles and access control, and it’s making a big impact. During the past five or six decades, the prefabricated buildings have been used as guard booths and guardhouses at major industrial plants and on commercial construction sites around the world.

Though the guardhouse isn’t a new product, the containerized MAC Portal with access control and turnstiles is a new invention and becoming a staple on construction sites for both industrial and commercial construction projects.

Having already proven its functionality as a tool for improving security perimeters for major contractors around the globe including Flour, Jacobs, KBR, and Bechtel at both refineries and coal-fired power plants, MSSI is encouraged by the great responses that it receives from commercial construction project managers in places like Montreal, New York City, Chicago, and San Francisco.

“Given the success and approval by those onsite at major commercial construction projects in some of the biggest cities in the U.S., we are very excited about the product’s potential going forward. Traditionally, we have been hugely successful in the industrial construction world, but industrial construction only accounts for about 20% of the major construction projects in the U.S. This uptick in interest and positive responses from commercial construction contractors bodes well for MSSI and the patented Modular Access Control (MAC) Portal” stated Robert Slagel, President and owner of MSSI.

“We encourage owners, construction managers, and security professionals in the commercial construction community to visit our website at SecuredByMAC.com and learn more about our products.” added Mr. Slagel.

MSSI Introduces the MAC-Lite for Commercial Construction Projects

MSSI Introduces the MAC-Lite for Commercial Construction Projects

Modular Security Systems Inc. (MSSI) recently completed construction on a new line of patented Modular Access Control (MAC) Portals for the commercial construction industry. We're calling these new perimeter security solutions the MAC-Lite. MAC-Lite Portals have been specifically designed to provide the same level of perimeter security as our standard MAC Portals but at a significantly reduced price.

At MSSI we know that many commercial construction projects are under strict budget constraints and often can't justify the price of a standard MAC Portal. With that knowledge, our engineering and design team has come up with this new simplified version of the MAC Portal. Excluding roll up doors, exterior/interior lighting, and replacing the standard steel walls with aluminum panels makes these patented MAC Portals much more affordable for customers in the commercial construction industry.

While perimeter security on commercial construction sites is often limited to a fence, a robust physical security plan with turnstile access points for employees can dramatically improve the overall success of a construction project. If you are involved in planning a major commercial construction project, the work force, tools, and building equipment are likely consume much of your construction budget. However, a relatively small investment in perimeter security can provide significant protection to a project’s assets and reduce costs associated with loss of time, time theft, and insurance claims.

Proper commercial construction perimeter security solutions can serve as a valuable line of defense against many different construction project concerns. This new line of MAC-Lite patented Modular Access Control (MAC) Portals can save any commercial construction project time an money over the life of the turnstile product.

We currently offer two MAC-Lite models, built with either 1 or 2 turnstile lanes.
