Protect the Perimeter of Your Construction Site During the Coronavirus

The importance and essential nature of physical security on construction sites is now more important than ever. Every year millions of dollars are lost to thieves on construction sites. But tools and equipment are not the only things that those thieves are stealing. Millions of dollars are also lost because of the time and effort it takes to replace those tools and equipment, and in many instances construction can grind to a halt while awaiting their arrival. Construction and the building of new homes, power plants, and commercial buildings is essential to the growth of our economy and the prosperity of our world. In order to keep up and push through these tough times, Modular Security Systems Inc. (MSSI) has been able to keep the lines of communication open for our customers both current and prospective.

In this week’s edition of the Turnstile Blog we'd like to take a look at some of the things you can do to make sure your construction site is secure.
Physical Perimeter Security

The outer perimeter of your construction site is defined by your perimeter fence and is essential to control who can walk or drive onto your property. In order to maintain a secure perimeter on your construction site, a solid fence that is professionally installed can make all the difference in the world.

In addition to a solid fence, the appropriate gates for foot traffic and vehicle traffic also need to be considered.  Products like the patented Modular Access Control (MAC) Portal and the patented Vehicle Access Control (VAC) Portal complete with climate-controlled guard offices, full-height turnstiles, and vehicle barrier gates can provide easy access for authorized individuals while acting as both a visual and physical deterrent for would-be thieves.

For many in the construction industry, the coronavirus has emphasized the need for a safe, healthy, and secure workforce. Even as the coronavirus sweeps around the world, many construction workers must continue to do their jobs.  We at MSSI would like to reiterate the CDC guidelines to keep yourself and your co-workers healthy in these trying times.

Make Sure To:

Wash your hands often

Refrain from touching your face

Allow for 6 feet of distance between co-workers

Remain positive, because we’ve got this!

Remember, as construction workers – the builders of our tomorrow – your team is essential to the future of our country and our world. MSSI and our line of perimeter security solutions is there to keep your construction sites secure and your workers safe, especially during times like these, when we are all being asked to do our part to stay healthy and think of others who may be impacted by our necessary daily activities.

5 Tips for Turnstile Users During the COVID-19 Pandemic

5 Tips for Turnstile Users During the COVID-19 Pandemic

It's common knowledge that anything people put their hands on regularly can be a major hotspot for germs and the spread of bacteria and viruses. From doorknobs to water fixtures to credit/debit card machine keypads to vending machines to cell phones, germs can hide in the most obvious of places. MSSI customers who use the patented Modular Access Control (MAC) Portal with full-height turnstiles have been asking what they can do to protect their employees while navigating their way into and off of construction sites around the world. In response, MSSI would like to offer some tips for turnstile users during the COVID-19 pandemic.

1) Wash your hands regularly. In light of the circumstances we face with COVID-19, "Wash your hands!" has become a major catch phrase. From news anchors to elected officials to co-workers and folks at home, everyone by now has gotten the memo. WASH YOUR HANDS (with warm water, for at least 20 seconds, as often as possible)! It can’t be said enough.

2) If possible, wear gloves when touching a turnstile arm. A great way to limit exposure to viruses and bacteria is to wear gloves when you must make contact with frequently touched surfaces. Gloves create a bit of a barrier between you and the germs that might be on the turnstile arms. Washable gloves should be laundered each day in warm water. Disposable gloves should be placed in the trash immediately. Be sure to wash your hands or use antibacterial hand sanitizer immediately upon removal of whichever type of gloves you choose to wear.

3) Use your elbow, shoulder, or back to push through the turnstile. Don't have a pair of gloves? Use another part of your body to turn the turnstile. Turnstiles are designed to turn in the direction in which they are being pushed. Once the turnstile is unlocked, you can simply (and carefully)  push through the turnstile with your back, elbow, forearm, hip or another part of your body.

4) Don't crowd your co-workers as you make your way through the turnstile. You've probably heard by now that social distancing is key to preventing the spread of COVID-19. You can help reduce the spread by not crowding at the turnstiles as you are making your way through them. Give each other some room (the CDC recommends at least six feet) and be patient as those in front of you enter or exit your construction site through the turnstiles.

5) Regularly disinfect the turnstiles using CDC approved methods. Between shift changes, designate someone on-site to use disinfectant wipes, sprays, and other cleaners to thoroughly clean the surface of the turnstile arms.

At Modular Security Systems Inc. (MSSI) we know how important we all are in preventing the spread of COVID-19 and flattening the curve. We also know that while many have been forced to stay home, many can't, so it's important to be informed on what we can do while at work to stay safe, secure, and healthy.

Turnstile Rentals & the MAC Portal in New York City

Recently in New York City, Local Law 196 was implemented to require all workers on construction sites to be up to date on safety training before they enter the perimeter of the project. Coupled with the right access control software and hardware, the MAC Portal and more recently the MAC Lite has come to the rescue by making sure that only authorized individuals with proper security/safety training credentials are able to access the construction site.

When the first patented MAC Portal landed in New York City at the Freedom Tower (One World Trade Center) construction site in 2009, MSSI had no idea just how successful the MAC Portal would become in the Big Apple. More recently MSSI has been called upon to provide perimeter security products at the Hudson Yard Project, John F. Kennedy Airport, and a number of other projects in and around New York City.

To accommodate the needs of customers that might not have the capital budget to purchase a patented MAC Portal, MSSI has built a fleet of standard floor plans for turnstile rentals. While typically patented MAC Portals have been sold directly to end users, the MAC Portal rental program has taken shape and come to the rescue of major construction companies in need of site security when they don’t have the capital to make purchases.

The flexibility of the patented Modular Access Control (MAC) Portal to incorporate site-specific requirements and access control software integration has helped make it the most trusted portable perimeter security solution for construction companies across the US and around the world. Today construction sites around the world have taken the initiative to guarantee successful projects by protecting the assets onsite through effective perimeter security.

Don't let a poor security plan for your construction project cost you time and money! Protect your construction site with a patented MAC Portal or the MAC Lite!

Top 5 Essentials to Protect the Perimeter of Your Construction Site

Top 5 Essentials to Protect the Perimeter of Your Construction Site

When you think of construction site security what is the first thing that comes to mind? Many of you are probably thinking "fences" – and you're not wrong. When it comes to perimeter security on your construction site, a sturdy fence is probably the most cost-effective way to make sure intruders can't and don't enter your perimeter. Fences prevent criminals and thieves from easily accessing your construction site and stealing equipment, tools, and building materials.

But construction site security doesn't end when you put up a strong, tall fence.

In this week’s edition of the turnstile blog we are going to be taking a look at the 5 essentials to protect the perimeter of your construction site.

1. FENCES
We mentioned fences earlier and yes, they are a given, but it never hurts to reiterate the importance of your first line of defense. When it comes to keeping your construction site secure from intrusion and preventing theft, a fence can provide both a physical and visual deterrent. A durable chain link fencing is not only a great idea but it's also easy to put up and tear down once construction has completed.

If you don’t have the time or energy to install this fencing on your own, hiring professional temporary fence installers is your best bet to a secure perimeter. They will have the expertise needed to ensure the temporary fence is installed correctly and will effectively secure your construction site.

2) GUARD HOUSES
Understandably, not all construction project managers are willing to depend on fences alone to keep their site and perimeter secure. Many site managers want to provide the actual physical presence of security guards at their site. Guard houses, guard booths, and guard offices make the perfect place for security professionals to do what they do. Climate-controlled and keeping guards out of the elements when necessary, guard houses may be equipped with access control technology, cameras, counter space, and any other security site requirement that security guards need to keep construction projects safe and secure 24 hours a day.

3) ACCESS CONTROL TECHNOLOGY
Access control technology? What's that? Access control technology can come in a wide range of hardware and software solutions. From the tracking of employees for time and attendance to the tracking of tools and equipment that can easily be tagged with RFID chips, access control technology can not only prevent theft but also help in the incarceration of thieves who are "brave" enough actually steal your stuff! While the type of access control technology you select for your specific job site may vary from one job to another depending on the size and scope of your project, we believe it’s been proven time and time again that no construction site security solution is complete without the implementation of some type of access control technology.

4) TURNSTILES
Have you ever walked right onto a construction project without even being approached by a security guard or having to pass through a secure turnstile or access point? No? Well, criminals have and do. Undeterred by an opening in a fence line and without having to produce identification granting them access to a construction site, criminals enter and exit construction sites everyday just "under the radar" and often walk away with thousands of dollars’ worth of tools and equipment. By utilizing turnstiles as security gates, construction sites around the U.S. are keeping their job sites safe from being entered by individuals who are out looking to steal tools, equipment, and other building materials.

5) VEHICLE GATES
The easy delivery of new tools, equipment, and building materials are essential to any construction project. Vehicle barrier gates like turnstiles work as deterrents for intruders in vehicles but also allow easy access for deliveries and shipments to enter your jobsite. A well marked delivery gate that allows for trucks to enter the construction site are just as important as the gate that allows workers to easily access the site on foot. Without the delivery of tools, equipment, and building materials those workers could be waiting for hours to get to work. The patented Vehicle Access Control (VAC) Portal is the perfect solution for incorporating vehicle barrier arms/gates into your perimeter security plan.

Have you heard that roughly, $300 million to $1 billion in equipment is stolen from commercial and industrial construction sites every year in the United States? The cost of implementing a perimeter security solution can be dwarfed by the loss of man-hours, time, tools, and equipment on an unsecure construction project.

MSSI Customer FAQ Top 10 Perimeter Security Questions

Posted by KJ Williams on Wed, Mar 11, 2020

MSSI, perimeter security, patented MAC Portal, Modular Security Systems Inc, perimeter security solution, portable perimeter security gate, Rent MAC-Lite, MAC-Lite Rental, FAQ, perimeter security FAQ

MSSI Customer FAQ Top 10 Perimeter Security Questions - DID YOU KNOW?

1. What is perimeter site security? How does my jobsite accomplish this successfully?

  • Perimeter site security is how your organization ensures unwanted/non-authorized visitors or intruders do not end up in places they should not be inside your workspace.
  • MSSI ensures your jobsite can restrict or deny access based on lack of credentials, subpar training certifications, jobsite restrictions, etc.
  • MSSI can partner with you by gathering the proper jobsite information, your specific site needs/requirements, and ultimately recommending the proper patented MAC Portal product to give you the confidence that compliance will be in full force.

2. Why do I need a turnstile on my project or jobsite?
  • Lots of answers for this one including: Limiting/reducing/eliminating exposure/risk/liability to your project, ensuring the safety and security of all the workforce on the inside and to the general public on the outside, assistance with payroll accuracy, as well as restricting unwanted guests from walking onto your project when no one is looking. Many of our customers utilize us to remain compliant for Local Law 196 or other site-specific regulatory obligations.

3. What is the cost of a turnstile?
  • MSSI completely customizes every solution offering based on the different factors involved. Ask us for more details.
4. Does MSSI offer a full turnkey solution with provided Access Control systems?
  • Yes. MSSI, if needed, can offer a full turnkey solution with dedicated Access Control Software, monitoring and reporting capabilities, along with a patented MAC Portal turnstile unit ensuring your perimeter site security needs are met and exceeded.

5. Customers sometimes experience “sticker shock” with MSSI costs. Why?
  • Fantastic statement and one that needs context around it. Most of the time, folks fail to realize the scope of their project and the need for a larger budget for safety and security when they are doing their initial bids. Once they come to the realization that they need to procure a full professional security layout, for their organization as well as the end user’s best interests, they have already committed to a smaller budget than is needed.
  • The other important factor to include here is the cost of having an unauthorized person come onto the site and either get injured or cause injury, not having the proper certifications to be onsite or having previous violations nobody knew about. What is the cost of reactively cleaning up a mess that could have been avoided? The time lost, money spent on recovery from the consequences of regulatory issues, and negative publicity to all parties could be incredibly expensive.

6. Who uses turnstiles? Where is the “sweet spot” to have a turnstile on a project?
  • End Users, General Contractors, Contract Managers, Security Integration Firms, etc. – anyone who is looking at ensuring a SAFE and SECURE perimeter to their worksite.
  • The “sweet spot” to have a turnstile solution onsite has changed throughout the years. It used to be stated that our solutions were meant for the biggest jobsites only. These days, organizations are realizing that personnel safety via security tracking is a major priority whether it’s a $500 million new build or a $25 million renovation school project.

7. What is the lead time on getting a turnstile on my project?
  • Lead times vary, depending on a few factors including: are you looking for a standard unit or a customized request, what is the quantity of units desired, and what is the destination of the delivery? Most of our units are on-site ready to go within 1-6 weeks fully integrated and plug-n-play ready to go.
8. Do you lease/rent or only outright sell your products?
  • Great question! MSSI offers our customers the ability to rent or purchase, giving you the flexibility you desire on your project.
9. Are these engineered solution offerings with the patented MAC Portals for Commercial, Industrial, or Government/Military project use?
  • ALL of the above. You can find our SecuredByMAC Products all over the world on military bases, data center builds, healthcare venue builds, turnarounds/shutdowns/outage projects on industrial facility sites, etc.
10. What other products does Modular Security Systems Inc. carry to assist our organization?
  • We are glad you asked! MSSI also carries Vehicle Access (VAC) Portals to assist with motor vehicles coming in and out of site. Guard houses are another popular product line that we assist our customers with. Check us out at www.SecuredByMAC.com for further details on all our products including specification sheets, drawing layouts, and much more.
