MSSI Cuts Ribbon on New MAC Portal Manufacturing Facility

Executives and employees from the Ironton-based Modular Security Systems, Inc. cut the ribbon on their new 40,000-square-feet facility in the former Marathon, Inc., airplane hangar at the Ashland Regional Airport in Worthington, Ky.
The additional space for manufacturing was necessary for MSSI to manage the growing demand for the Modular Access Control (MAC) Portal which is marketed world-wide as an access control solution for power plants, refineries, and large industrial construction sites. The MAC Portal is essentially a fence-line ready guardhouse with access control technologies and full height turnstiles. MAC Portals can be found as close as the Marathon Refinery in Catlettsburg, KY and as far away as refineries in Kazakhstan for companies like Chevron and Exxon Mobil.
The overwhelming demand for access control technologies coupled with modular turnstile facilities quickly outgrew the company's 10,000-square-foot manufacturing building in Olive Hill, Ky. With numerous calls coming in on a daily basis for MSSI's MAC Portals the company felt assured that making the leap to quadruple the size of its manufacturing facility was the right move and the empty hangar that had been turned over to the airport authority by Marathon seemed a logical place.
"At one point we were manufacturing in Indiana but we couldn't get the quality we needed," MSSI Co-President Rob Slagel said. "But we could get it here in the Tri-State. We have a skilled labor force that knows steel. This was a good place to locate." The 20 employees at the Olive Hill plant were transferred to the Worthington facility and with the increased demand MSSI looks to add another 20 to 30 jobs for skilled laborers in the area.
The expansion was hailed by local officials Monday as an example of what can be accomplished when governments and businesses work together. "It's really going to be the strong small businesses that pull us out of this economic downturn," Kentucky State Sen. Robin Webb said.
