This years Force Protection Equipment Demonstration (FPED) held at Stafford Regional Airport, just north of Fredericksburg, Virginia proved to be another successful outing for MSSI and the MAC Portal. FPED, hosted by the US Army Product Manager, Force Protection Systems (PM-FPS) and sponsored by the Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Homeland Security, and the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) to name a few brought together defense and security companies from around the globe to display and demonstrate the latest in security technologies.
The MSSI booth, displaying a MAC-4 complete with 4 full height turnstile walkthroughs, and a spacious guard office, received a large number of visitors at this years FPED. Interest in the MAC as a turnkey, perimeter security checkpoint, also enticed a wide array of new visitors to the booth. From "top brass" military officials to high ranking members and owners in the nuclear energy generation industry the MAC portal generated a buzz at the show. Rob Slagel, Co-President and Co-Owner of Modular Security Systems Inc. stated, "The interest from the nuclear industry is noticeable and exciting." Due to the implementation of some new rules regarding isolation zones and perimeter security for nuclear power plants, other nuclear reactors and radioactive facilities the MAC saw an influx of interest from the nuclear community.
In broad terms the new Nuclear Regulation 10 CFR 73.55 requires all nuclear power plants, radioactive facilities, and other nuclear reactors to establish a larger isolation zone or security perimeter around their facility. All nuclear operations across the United States have been required to come into compliance with the new regulations by March of 2010. "With its versatility to be integrated with any number of site specific security software and a 4-6 week production time the MAC provides the right product at the right time for a lot of these sites" added Mr. Slagel.
According to plant administrators from nuclear power companies like First Energy, Progress Energy, and the Los Alamos National Laboratory the nuclear community in the US is a small tight knit group that works together and shares ideas on a regular basis. Having heard that a MAC security portal was just recently delivered to Entergy Nuclear Energy in Louisiana many of the attendees from the nuclear community had heard of the MAC and made it a priority to visit the booth at this years FPED.
