Modular Security Systems Inc. is more than pleased to announce that as of July 27, 2010 the Modular Access Control (MAC) Portal has been Patented through the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Over the past couple of years Modular Security Systems Inc. has reported on the various stages of the patent process and we are excited to announce that the Official Patent (Patent No. US 7,762,025) has been received at MSSI headquarters and will soon be framed for display in recognition of the occasion.
MSSI Co-Owner, David Slagel stated, "I'd like to reiterate what I've said in the past and that is that we want to ensure our past and future customers that this patent will not impact our product pricing, product quality, or customer service. We have and will continue to be the low cost solution by providing portable containerized turnstile security systems using both full height and half height turnstiles."

As previously reported the patent for the Modular Access Control (MAC) Portal is not turnstile type specific and does not require MSSI to incorporate only full-height turnstiles into its modular guardhouse but rather any type of a barrier device including half-height turnstiles and other types of barrier devices. MSSI would like to use its patent to enable it to team up with distributors interested in providing these containerized portable guard shacks with access control turnstiles in a cross marketing effort of the MAC security portal.

As anyone who has had any experience with the patent application process would tell you it is a worthwhile venture that can bring tremendous benefits to a company with intellectual property. Modular Security Systems, Inc. (MSSI) has patent applications on file and the patent process is underway in the United States. MSSI has already received an official patent for the Modular Access Control (MAC) Portal outside of the United States and MSSI is optimistic that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office will grant it patents in the near future.
MSSI's patent applications cover a Containerized Access Control System. David Slagel, Co-Owner of MSSI stated, "We want to ensure our customers that the pending patent will not impact our product pricing, product quality, or customer service. We remain committed to being the low cost solution by providing portable containerized turnstile security systems using both full height and half height turnstiles."
The patent applications are not turnstile type specific, meaning the patent applications have claims which cover any type of a barrier device including half-height turnstiles and other types of barrier devices. MSSI has been well pleased with the performance of all makes and models of barrier devices that it has installed thus far in its manufacturing of the MAC Security Portal.

Executives and employees from the Ironton-based Modular Security Systems, Inc. cut the ribbon on their new 40,000-square-feet facility in the former Marathon, Inc., airplane hangar at the Ashland Regional Airport in Worthington, Ky.
The additional space for manufacturing was necessary for MSSI to manage the growing demand for the Modular Access Control (MAC) Portal which is marketed world-wide as an access control solution for power plants, refineries, and large industrial construction sites. The MAC Portal is essentially a fence-line ready guardhouse with access control technologies and full height turnstiles. MAC Portals can be found as close as the Marathon Refinery in Catlettsburg, KY and as far away as refineries in Kazakhstan for companies like Chevron and Exxon Mobil.
The overwhelming demand for access control technologies coupled with modular turnstile facilities quickly outgrew the company's 10,000-square-foot manufacturing building in Olive Hill, Ky. With numerous calls coming in on a daily basis for MSSI's MAC Portals the company felt assured that making the leap to quadruple the size of its manufacturing facility was the right move and the empty hangar that had been turned over to the airport authority by Marathon seemed a logical place.
"At one point we were manufacturing in Indiana but we couldn't get the quality we needed," MSSI Co-President Rob Slagel said. "But we could get it here in the Tri-State. We have a skilled labor force that knows steel. This was a good place to locate." The 20 employees at the Olive Hill plant were transferred to the Worthington facility and with the increased demand MSSI looks to add another 20 to 30 jobs for skilled laborers in the area.
The expansion was hailed by local officials Monday as an example of what can be accomplished when governments and businesses work together. "It's really going to be the strong small businesses that pull us out of this economic downturn," Kentucky State Sen. Robin Webb said.

Perimeter security is evolving and to meet the demands of the changing needs of its customers, Modular Security Systems (MSSI) has introduced a new line of Modular Access Control (MAC) Portal. The tentatively called "V" Series in its current state is a combination of three MAC modules joined together to create vestibules for both the secure and non-secure sides of a standard MAC Portal. "A great deal of our customers in colder climates or coastal regions began to ask about putting a waiting area or lobby in the MAC so that their employees and visitors could get out of the weather while waiting to pass through the turnstiles", stated David Slagel, Co-Owner of Modular Security Systems. "Although we conservatively estimate that 9 people a minute can process through a single turnstile or 3000 people an hour through six turnstiles we were happy to oblige", added Steve Shelton, Sales and Project Manager for Modular Security Systems.
Based on the needs of its customers Modular Security Systems continues to grow its already impressive product line. Since the introduction of the first 4 turnstile MAC Portal in 2004 Modular Security Systems has developed a standard line of Modular Access Control Portals ranging from 1 to 10 turnstile units. Then in 2006 the Advanced Screening Complex (ASC) was developed expressly for the New York Port Authority as a site security solution for the Freedom Tower construction site at ground zero in New York City. The New "V" Series MAC Portals are similar to an ASC in that they are multi-MAC module units that have been technologically toned down. "Our ASC is like the Cadillac of perimeter security. It has all the bells and whistles: metal detectors, explosive detection devices, x-rays and ballistic guard offices, but not all of our customers need such a robust unit", stated David Slagel. "More and more customers want more of a Camry than a Cadillac when it comes to meeting their perimeter security needs. So weve created the "V" series by adjoining additional MAC Modules to create vestibules on either side of one of our standard MAC Portals."
The New "V" Series Modular Access Control (MAC) Portal is sure to attract a wide range of customers in both cold and hot weather climates. By adding vestibules to either side of a standard MAC Portal MSSI has created a climate-controlled, perimeter security solution that can be installed as both a permanent or temporary solution. "As the needs of our customers change it is important for us, as a growing company, to be able to adapt to their needs and in turn, modify and enhance our product line to suit them", added Steve Shelton. The "V" Series MAC Portal is just the next evolution in the Modular Security Systems product line and it surely wont be the last. As the needs of our customers change so will our products."

In October of 2008 Modular Security Systems, Inc., MSSI announced that it had received a formal Notice of Allowance from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on its intellectual property application regarding Access Control Turnstiles used inside of the branded MAC Security Portal. This Notice of Allowance being issued by the U. S. Patent and Trademark office to MSSI very much emboldened the MSSI management team that other patent filings might also be approved.
In addition to filing for intellectual property rights with the US Patent and Trademark Office MSSI has also filed for patent rights of the MAC Security Portal in many other countries around the world. The criteria that MSSI used to select which countries to file in was heavily based on natural resource reserves. MSSI filed patent applications in countries that were known to have large amounts of sought after natural resources and industrial activity. On July 5th 2009, MSSI was pleased to receive the official Letters Patent for its mobile turnstile unit from the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This Nigerian Patent which has been issued to Modular Security Systems, Inc (MSSI) is for a term of 20 years, has a filing date of 15 September 2005 and an expiration date of 15 September 2025.
Modular Security Systems, Inc., MSSI, Co-President, Rob Slagel has this to say: "We at MSSI had just months ago received the Notice of Allowance from the U. S. Patent and Trademark office regarding our intellectual property filing for this mobile access control container and were extremely pleased and surprised when our Nigerian patent was awarded earlier this week ahead of some of the other international filings for intellectual property that MSSI has made."
Modular Security Systems, Inc. (MSSI) official position on this receipt of Federal Republic of Nigeria Letters Patent is as follows; the awarded Letters Patent cover our Containerized Access Control Systems. We want to ensure our customers that the patent allowances WILL NOT impact our product pricing, product quality or customer service. We remain committed to being the low cost solution for providing an access control turnstile and/or access control turnstiles to your sites and we are dedicated to providing you with exceptional customer service.

Having provided Modular Access Control (MAC) portals to nearly three hundred locations in the United States it seemed only a matter of time before the rest of the world caught on. In recent years MSSI has put close to fifty patented MAC Portals on the ground, outside the US, in places like Canada, to secure the oil sands, Iraq and Kuwait, to aid in the security of our troops, and more recently in the Republic of Kazakhstan, to protect and secure oil refining there. On September 16th, 2009 MSSI received the go ahead to install three more MAC-4s to a booming refinery near the Kazakhstanian city of Atyrau.
Atyrau City, whose name is Kazakh for the place where the river flows into the sea, has a population of 180,000 people and is located at the mouth of the Ural River and the Caspian Sea. Founded in 1992 the Tengizchevroil Partnership, a joint venture between Chevron, Exxon Mobil, and the Republic of Kazakhstan has provided hundreds if not thousands of jobs for residents in and around the city. Owning 40 year rights to oil reserves in the surrounding area called Korolevskoye and in the Caspian Sea, the Tengiz refinery has continued to grow and with that growth has realized the need for additional access control security.
Having used the patented MAC Portal at various refineries in the United States top ranking officers within Chevron and Exxon Mobil knew just who to contact for an access control solution. Since the inception of the project MSSI has delivered four MAC Portals to the Tengiz refinery, including one MAC-1, a MAC-2, a MAC-4 and one MAC-8. With the patented MAC Portals onsite the partnership has been able to increase site security and more efficiently track and maintain time-keeping records. The MACs, given their name in direct correlation to the number of turnstile walkthrough bays utilized in their design, have proven themselves so useful that the Tengiz refinery has recently placed an order for three more MAC-4s bringing the patented MAC Portal total onsite to seven.
These newly ordered MAC 4s will incorporate four full-height turnstiles, proximity card readers, and will be delivered integrated with the access control software specified by the site. "Working with people on the other side of the planet is exciting, but it does provide its own set of challenges", stated Kevin Harrison, Vice President of Modular Security Systems, "one being the significant difference in the time from here to there. They're about ten or eleven hours ahead of us so a lot of our correspondence takes place before or after our regular office hours." "Another hurdle is the delivery time; it will actually take us less time to build these MAC-4s than it will for them to be delivered, but once they reach their destination these turn-key MAC Portals will be ready to plug and play."

For the fifth year in a row Modular Security Systems, Inc. and Dropbox, Inc. attended the Coal Gen International Trade Show in Charlotte, North Carolina. In support of custom container modifications, the Modular Access Control (MAC) Portal, and Dropboxes running water product line, which includes the Sanitation Station, Ryan Mitchell and Robert Slagel once again, hit the road. With fellow exhibitors and attendees ranging from major construction companies like Shaw, Jacobs, Bechtel, and Flour to vendors that cater to the power generation companies like American Electric Power, Duke Energy, East Kentucky Power Coop, and Progress Energy, Dropbox and MSSI made an impact with their product information, cutting edge booth technology, and activities.
"I was really impressed with the level of "trade show" conditioning demonstrated by the visitors to our booth", stated Ryan Mitchell. "We had a pretty entertaining putting challenge for our guests and the number of people that came by to hit some putts, but then, to my surprise, mentioned seeing our products out in the field was astounding."
A number of the attendees to Coal Gen 2009 have become familiar with both the MAC portal and the Sanitation Station through previous experience at trade shows like Coal Gen, at refineries, power plants, and other industrial construction sites across the country. "If they werent already familiar with our company and its container modifications, most that came by to hit a few putts actually stuck around to ask us what we do," stated Ryan.
"We have some pretty recognizable products and weve made significant impact in this industry over the past few years", added Robert Slagel. "It makes me proud to know that our products are so well received and favored by our customers. The recognition we gain from being onsite at some of the largest construction projects across the country continues to astound me".
With Dropbox sales reaching over a hundred units and MSSI sales climbing over the two hundred and fifty range, both companies have a lot to celebrate. "Trade shows like Coal Gen and site visits, that we make on a regular basis to our customers, help us gauge their needs and to also gain useful feedback on our products", mentioned Ryan. "Our customers and the relationships built onsite and at trade shows like Coal Gen are invaluable to us and the success of our business."
